HAIR's book and lyrics were written by actors and authors Jim Rado and Gerry Ragni. They were introduced by show biz agent Nat Shapiro to Galt MacDermot who wrote the music. The show was first produced by Joseph Papp at the Public Theater. After its initial run at the Public Theater it was moved to a nightclub called The Cheetah. With a new director, Tom O'Horgan, it was taken to Broadway by producer Michael Butler.

HAIR achieved a unique level of success in the entertainment world. The landmark musical was phenomenally successful on stage and the songs were equally successful on the radio. HAIR opened Off Broadway in 1967 then ran on Broadway from 1968 to 1972.

There were 19 other productions around the world at the same time. HAIR has been performed continuously around the world ever since it opened. In 1969 songs from HAIR reached 1,2,3,4 on the Billboard Top 40. 'Aquarius/Let the Sunshine In' performed by the Fifth Dimension was the number 1 song in the world in 1969.

HAIR announced the 'Dawning of the Age of Aquarius' and was a life changing experience for many who saw it or performed in it. HAIR and it's songs have become woven into the fabric of people's lives all around the world. The show gives 'permission' to the viewers to be free, to see how much fun life can be.
